Ryan has his first cold. It started last Friday with a fever that lasted into Saturday. Now he has a very wet, rattly sounding cough. I’ll give him a day or so on some OTC medication, and if that doesn’t cut it we’ll head to the doctor.
Am I wrong for not rushing to the doctor over the slightest twinge? I realize that there are illnesses and viruses that need to be taken care of by a doctor, but I’m not about to waste my time, the doctor’s time and my money for a cough here or a fever there. I take the wait and see approach – I monitor my child, dose him or her with the appropriate medication(s), and give the bug 24 hours to work its way out of their system. If after 24 hours things aren’t looking better, I will then call the doctor.
What is your approach?
