At what age would you buy your child a cell phone? I ask because I am disgusted with my eleven year old brother deviling my mother, myself and just about anyone who will listen about a cell phone. “But I need one!” is his favorite saying. Need one? For what? To play games? That’s what his GameCube, Wii and GameBoy are for. To talk to people? That’s what the phone is for. To get in touch with his friends? What friends? The friends that live in the neighborhood and are usually outside playing?
I didn’t get my first cell phone until I was sixteen, and I only got that phone because I was working and coming home late – 10pm, 11pm, 12am, 1am, and since I was only sixteen and out late driving, my mom wanted me to have a way to get in touch with her or emergency services in case something happened. And even then, the phone was a very basic cell phone with no bells and whistles, and was on a prepaid plan. Nothing fancy.
I won’t get either of my children cell phones until they’re working. And even then, the phones will be on prepaid plans, and I expect my children to contribute part of their earnings to cover the prepaid minutes.
