Over this past week, I have offered up about $300 worth of baby and toddler clothes on freecycle, and dropped off more at the local shelter. Six months ago I probably would have taken everything to the consignment shop in the hopes of getting about $40 or so to spend on used clothing. But now? Because we can afford to buy things new (and I must admit, I love having this season’s fashions!), I have no qualms, regrets or hesitancies about giving away clothing for free.
I try to be fair with my freecycle dealings. I’ll bundle socks and onesies as a package deal. But for other items – jackets, shirts, sweaters and pants – I list things separately, and request that people only take a few of each. This way, everything gets spread around.
I have also given away a few big-ticket items on freecycle – two slings, a stroller, two car seats, exosaucer, swing, bouncer, crib mobile, a Classic Pooh crib set (bumper and headboard piece). And last fall, due to scheduling conflicts, Dan was unable to go to Hershey Park with his brothers. So, I gave away about $100 worth of tickets. Honestly, the amount of emails with “I would love to take my kids, but haven’t been able to afford to!” made me really sad. I wish I had one hundred tickets to give away, instead of four.
In return, freecycle has been good to me. Thankfully, we no longer have a need for freecycle, but when we did, we were treated well, and honestly received just about everything we asked for!
