This is really sad. In a nutshell, a married couple with medical backgrounds (Thomas Boettger is an EMT, and his wife, Lorrie, is a midwife) routinely drugged their six month old baby boy with Benadryl and Unisom tablets and God knows what else to get him to sleep at night and during nap time. Apparently the baby was given the medicine regularly so he wouldn’t fuss and stay up.
I know how frustrating it can be to have babies and toddlers not sleep. But seriously. Take them for a walk. Take them for a ride in a car. Give them the recommended dosage of infant Tylenol. But don’t use Benadryl, and PLEASE do not use adult strength sleeping pills!
That poor baby. The article goes on to say that the parents could be convicted and serve fifteen years in prison. As far as I’m concerned, they should. While I’m sure they never intended to cause their baby’s death, they clearly knew better.
