A little while ago (we have had some problems getting her to bed lately; a lot of family stress has contributed to keeping her up at all hours of the night) Alyssa came to me and said, “Mommy, there’s paper in my nose”. I was sure I hadn’t heard right, so I asked her what she said. Pointing to her nose, she repeated, “Mommy, there’s paper in my nose”. My mother, who was here at the time, looked at me and scoffed, “Yeah right. Why would she do that?”
Well, Alyssa has never lied about anything (does a three year old even understand the concept of lying?), so after she told me a third time that, “There’s paper in my nose. Right here!”, I grabbed a flashlight and positioned her in my lap, with her head tilted back. At first I didn’t see anything, so I demonstrated to her how to blow out of her nose, and asked her to do so as hard as possible, while I pinched the nostril she hadn’t pointed to shut. Sure enough, there was a white obstruction inside her nose.
So, I did what any mom would do. No, I didn’t call the doctor in a panic. Instead, I washed my hands, grabbed a pair of tweezers and washed them, and then had my mom hold her in her lap and keep her head still with one hand while aiming a flashlight towards her nose with the other. I showed her what I would do with the tweezers, and then asked her if I could do the same with her nose. She said no, but after I washed the tweezers again, held still while I carefully slid them into her nose. A few seconds later I had a rather large wad of paper pulled out of her nose.
I asked Alyssa why she shoved paper up her nose. She had no answer. I made her promise not to do it again, and she assured me she wouldn’t. I hope she follows through with that!
