So last night, both of our kids were crying in pain. But for two totally different reasons.
Alyssa was up first. I was in the kitchen, and I had my electric griddle on the counter, pushed as far away from the edge as I could get it, but still within reaching distance, if Alyssa stood on her tip-toes and realllllllllllly stretched (since Ryan is several inches shorter than her, he wasn’t a concern). She asked me what the griddle was. I told her that it was called a griddle, and that Mommy makes food on it, but it is VERY VERY HOT, so do NOT TOUCH or it will HURT. I no sooner turn away to grab a spatula and she sets up a howl. Yup, she completely disregarded my order and my warning, and reached up and touched it. For about two hours afterward we kept her finger in a cup of cold water. While the burn wasn’t enough to warrant medical attention, I know it was painful, as the skin had bubbled/blistered up a bit, and any burn hurts like a bitch.
Two lessons learned there: 1) HOT ITEMS are PAINFUL to touch and 2) LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER
Then Ryan. Poor Ryan. He is lactose intolerant. I could drink my weight in milk and then nurse him, and he would be fine. He can also eat cheese and other dairy products. But milk? Forget it. It comes out of him in the form of acidic, skin eating poop, which, if left in contact with his skin for more than 0.5 seconds, will eat it raw.
Well, we put him to bed last night, and didn’t think anything of him playing around in bed with his stuffed animal. About fifteen minutes later I went to check on him. I smelled it. IT. The smell of the acid poop. Apparently, he must have gotten hold of Alyssa’s sippy cup earlier that day, which had regular milk in it. I got his clothes off as fast as possible, but the damage had been done. It was awful… the skin was leaking a bit of clear fluid, and he was so red. So raw. Dan had to hold him down and hold his legs while I used the softest cloths I could find, soaking them in water before wringing them out over his butt and dabbing at his skin gently as possible. It was terrible to have to have him held down and clean him and then apply thick globs of cream and then medicated powder while he screamed with pain. I was near tears listening to him…
Honestly, after last night’s episode, I’m very tempted to switch Alyssa over to Lactaid as well. It means spending the same amount of money for half as much milk, but at least I don’t have to worry about considering her sippy cups contraband around Ryan!
