While at the park today with my three and a half year old daughter, Alyssa, we encountered a situation that I know a lot of people are torn on: having dogs at playgrounds. The dog in question was a Boxer, and while he was very friendly, he was very rambunctious. And very big. Worse still, the owner of the dog, a man who seemed more interested in showing off his pedigreed pooch than playing with his children, took the dog off the leash and let him roam free.
I don’t know about you, but the thought of a large dog having the run of a park where there are several small, loud, shrieking children at play doesn’t sit well with me. Now before I go any further, let me assure you that I love animals. I am very fond of dogs. If it weren’t for how dependent dogs are, I’d probably have one.
However, I also know that dogs do not enjoy loud, shrieking sounds. They will tolerate so much for only so long. Even the most docile dogs have been known to suddenly attack. You read about it on the news all of the time — dogs attacking owners, dogs attacking children in parks, on the street, even in their own homes.
So knowing all of that, and knowing how easily a small child could be seriously injured by a large dog, or possibly even killed, why would you not only bring a large dog into a situation where several young children are present, but then take things a step further and release the dog from his leash?
