1 in 50 babies abused

A study found that 1 in 50 babies are abused at least once during the first year of life. What is more alarming is that a third of those babies are abused during the first week of life. These figures also include neglect, neglect being defined as:

failure to meet a child’s basic needs including housing, clothing, feeding and access to medical care

The study does not include new parent mistakes, such as mistaking a baby’s hunger cry for a fussy cry, or leaving a soiled diaper on too long, or some other similar, non-malicious, honest to goodness mistake.

And sadly, the study is based on documented and verifiable cases of abuse. Which leaves you to wonder: how many more babies are being abused that we don’t know about?

So, after reading this, you’re probably wondering: What can I do to make a difference? Sometimes it’s the simple things. Do you know of an overwhelmed new parent? Or a young, pregnant woman who doesn’t have a lot of support from friends and family? Reach out to them. Offer to coach them. Cook dinner for them. Volunteer to babysit.

If you suspect abuse, or worry that someone might abuse a baby that is in their care, don’t hesitate to report it. When it comes to children, particularly babies and infants, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Ugh, it makes my stomach sick just to think of helpless little babies being hurt.

  2. It’s a really sad world that we live in today. How on earth can someone harm an innocent baby or child is beyond me.
