The one thing I hate about parenthood is that there is no OFF switch. If it’s late and you just want to go to bed, you can’t unless the kids are asleep. And if one or both of them wakes up for some reason, then you’re up to. If you want to go out somewhere, you need to answer any texts or calls from the family member or friend watching your children, in case something happens. Even the kid being at preschool is no guarantee of 2.5 kid-free hours.
And with Ryan, it really is 24/7. I can’t tell you how many nights I’ll be settling in to go to sleep, watch television or even read and write about Kettlebell or some other subject, and he’ll wake up and start rocking. And then I have to drop what I’m doing and take care of him.
The biggest thing about parenthood is having to put the children first, and in a lot of cases above your own wants and even your own needs. And I am not ashamed to admit that sometimes, that really, really sucks.
