  • Speech therapy?

Last year and again about six months ago thoughts of speech therapy were tossed around at the meetings we have every 3-6 months with the state agencies that provide Ryan’s therapeutic services. Last year, we decided not to start speech therapy just yet, since he wasn’t really talking, and we had more important things to focus on (excessive head/body rocking, horrible transitioning, sleep problems, etc.). Six months ago we decided not to start speech therapy then because Ryan was in the process of learning to talk — experimenting with sounds, words, two and three word phrases, etc.

Now he knows all of his letters and numbers, can say just about any word, sings along with songs, and can hold little conversations with us — not long, but enough to get out requests and such.

But now I am thinking about speech therapy… what makes me think of it how he handles words that end with -er. Water and diaper come to mind. Water comes out wah-yee, and diaper comes out ipe-ay. He just can’t figure out the -er sound. There are other words ending with -er that I know he says in a similar fashion (using -yee or -ay instead of -er), but of course they’re not coming to mind at this very moment.

So, I’ve made some calls, and as far as I know, we’re on the waiting list for speech therapy. In the meantime, we’ll do the best we can on our own, and with the assistance of Ryan’s occupational therapist and special instructor.
