I can’t believe it. I have turned into one of those moms. Not the ones watching QVC for the special on the Diamond Initial Pendant, but the one with all of the teacher-sounding rules. You know the ones… the ones who remind their children to use their indoor voices, not run in the house, etc. But seriously? There is no need to be loud in the house. No yelling, no shrieking, no squealing. Alyssa has a very good understanding of this, but Ryan is still loud at times. Come to think of it, Alyssa is loud too… whenever I’m in the other room and she thinks I can’t hear her. She hasn’t gotten it in her head that her shrill, squealy little voice can travel through the entire house. I remind her with scoldings, loss of preferred toys and time-outs.
Speaking of toys, would it be unreasonable of me to lay down a rule stating that toys must be kept in bedrooms? Alyssa and Ryan each have their own bedroom. Alyssa has a bed, a nightstand, a bureau, a rocking chair and a white toy bin. Ryan has a bed, a chest of drawers and a toy bin (we haven’t gotten around to getting him a nightstand yet, and there’s really no room for a rocking chair). They both have plenty of space to pull out toys and play with them. Yet they insist on dragging their crap out into the living room. I don’t really want their crap in the living room. I mean, that’s why they have bedrooms… to sleep and play in!
What do you think: toys allowed in the living room, or not? What do you do in your house?
