The importance of budgeting

My husband and I have learned the hard way the importance of keeping careful track of every dollar spent. I won’t go into details, but let’s just say that we no longer use personal checks, or even a bank account for that matter. We have an online savings account and that’s it. All expenses and purchases are paid for in cash, via money order or via my PayPal account. How nice life is without bounce fees!

But even though we either pay for things or don’t, rather than writing checks or using a line of credit, I’m still interested in sitting down and setting up some type of budgeting system. Managing finances is often a lot easier when you can see everything on paper (or monitor) in front of you. I’ve used Quicken and Microsoft Money in the past, but they’re both complicated, and offer so many more features than what I really need.

If you use budgeting software, what do you use? I recently heard about NeoBudget’s envelope budgeting software. It seems really easy to use from what I can gather from the overview and tour. Plus it’s online-based, which means it can be accessed from any computer. I personally love that option, since I have a desktop and laptop and use both regularly.

NeoBudget offers financial management using the envelope method of budgeting — allocating certain amounts of money for bills, groceries, fuel, eating out, clothing, etc. You can also import bank account debits and credits by uploading transaction files, and even notate when paychecks from you and/or your spouse are deposited into your bank account, and allocate the money accordingly.

Use of the online software is just $2.50 a month, and a free 7-day trial is available.
