I grew up with Nintendo, Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis — and I had the systems in that order. Back in those days the systems were $100, I believe, and the games were $20 – $25 apiece — omgs so expensive! God, these days I think most of us parents and gamers would KILL for games to be just $20 or so apiece, as opposed to $50 and even $60.
I was never much of a gamer, but I did enjoy the game systems, and I liked playing video games when I got together with friends. I remember working on Sonic the Hedgehog 3 with my best friend Todd in fifth grade. He even borrowed the game for a good six months so he could work on beating the entire game before giving it back to me.
Why the talk about games? Well, last weekend I picked up a Wii for us. I was thinking about giving Dan and the kids a Wii for Christmas, but never got around to it. But then last Saturday I got the opportunity to try out Super Mario Bros., and I was seriously, instantly hooked. So hooked that I insisted Dan go to the nearest Walmart that very night for a copy of the game. Unfortunately, they were closed. So the next day I picked up a copy at Target (I think they had *just* gotten a shipment of the games that morning, since when I picked up one there were at least another ten copies, and when I stopped in yesterday evening they had absolutely nothing left. Same deal with the cute little HP netbooks they had advertised before Christmas. It looks like Wii games and netbooks were both very popular this year!), but when I got home with it, Dan pointed out that we couldn’t play it together on the Wii system we’ve been borrowing from my mom, since she only had one remote. So out I went for a remote… couldn’t find one, and before I could change my mind I went ahead and purchase an entire Wii system.
Anyway, I got off on a tangent. The whole “kickin’ it old school” subject line has nothing to do with the Wii I bought us or the Super Mario Bros. game I’m currently loving, and everything to do with the old Super Nintendo system I hooked up for Alyssa to play Super Mario All-Stars on.
I guess it’s safe to say that we’re definitely a gaming household!
