I remember web directories! Of course, the web directories I’m recalling were hosted on personal domains and were for personal domains and hosted sites, and cliques, message boards, link rotations and those sorts of “sub” sites. I’m pretty sure I had my own web directory at some point, hosted as a subdomain on one of my domains (perhaps it was even on kiss-my-kitty.com). It had a bajillion categories and wasn’t all that popular, but I was a stickler for checking every submission and making sure that the required backlink to my web directory was included.
These days web directories are hosted by commercial companies or specialty companies, and are aimed primarily at business owners. I don’t use them myself, but that’s only because the work I do for one client in particular includes web design, WordPress maintenance, general blog maintenance, and the occasional social networking submission. But I know that all of the companies whose websites we manage ultimately have their sites submitted to a variety of web directories, including the ever popular DMOZ and Yahoo Directory. Depending on the directory you use, the submission may be free, it may require a payment, or you may be required to do some sort of link exchange in order to have your website added to the listings. Directory submissions can be tedious and a bit time-consuming, but I promise, the time you spend submitting your website(s) to directories is well worth it!
So why use a web directory? Well, if you have an online store that you’d like to promote, it makes sense to use a web directory in order to promote it successfully. Web directories such as DMOZ, Yahoo Directory, and Jasmine directory not only expose your website to additional internet surfers; they also promote your website from an SEO standpoint. And nothing is better for SEO than an SEO friendly web directory!
