I’ve done a lot of pre-spring cleaning in the past two weeks. First the kids’ bedrooms, then their closets, then the laundry room, then the bathrooms, then underneath all of the furniture, then the pantry, then our closet, then our bedroom, then my computer desk. And finally, the one thing I’ve been putting off for more than a year: the two cabinets beneath the kitchen sink.
It’s not that I have an aversion to my kitchen, or the contents of the cabinet. It’s that our kitchen sink sprung a leak about a year or so back, a slow leak that we didn’t notice for a few, er, weeks. When we did, Dan fixed it, and he cleaned out everything, but some mold had begun to accumulate. Since then many of the cans were looking a bit rusty and just overall gunky (don’t ask me what the gunk was. Quite frankly, I don’t want to know. I’m sure I could have made human growth hormone or penicillin out of it!), and have I mentioned my aversion to mold? Seriously, it makes me want to run screaming in the opposite direction.
But I womaned up, grabbed a garbage can and cleared out probably three quarters of the canned goods in those two cabinets. Most of them had expiration dates of ’08 and mid-2009, but there were a few ’07 cans in there as well. Whoops!
Once I cleaned out the gunk, I wiped down the floor of the cabinets, rearranged the metal wired shelves I have underneath there, and then reorganized the remaining canned contents, boxed contents and cleaning supplies.
Fun times! But not so fun of a time for the garbage collectors (they come tomorrow). That one can is HEAVY. Sorry guys.
