Vaccinations are a touchy subject for a lot of parents, and for the record, I do vaccinate. I chose to stagger vaccinations, however, so that Alyssa and Ryan aren’t loaded up with loads of them at once. I feel that vaccinations are important. And also for the record, even if it didn’t come out that the connection between vaccinations and autism was falsified, exaggerated, fabricated, whatever, I would still have no regrets about vaccinating my children. Because let’s face it, an autistic child is better than a child with lifelong health problems due to contracting a disease that vaccinations prevent. Or, worse yet, a dead child. Or one who won’t have a long, fulfilling life. I personally know of a child whose heart will most likely give out before he’s 30, due to being significantly damaged and weakened from a disease (I forget which one) that a vaccination would have easily prevented from taking hold.
With that said, there’s a chance that Ryan and/or Alyssa might come down with the chicken pox in the next few days. A friend of ours has shingles, but didn’t know it until late last week, and he was over our house several times early last week. Whoops. I didn’t think anything of it until tonight, when Ryan zonked out on the couch around 5:00pm, and remained asleep until I woke him at 10:30pm to change his diaper and try and get him to eat some scrambled eggs and hot cereal. He didn’t want to get up, asked repeatedly to go back to sleep (or in his words: “lay down”, “take nap”, “have bedtime”), and was slightly flushed and warm to the touch. So I changed him, gave him some water to drink, and put him to bed. When I checked on him a few minutes ago his cheeks were still a little flushed and warmer than usual, but he’s snoring and seems content, so I’m letting him be.
Also for the record, Alyssa and Ryan are obviously not vaccinated against chicken pox. But while they’re not vaccinated, I would never deliberately expose them, either, so unfortunately our friend is going to have to steer clear of us until he’s better!
I guess I’ll find out how he is in the morning!
