I meant to post about this over the weekend, but I’ve been very sick (and as it turns out, I have pneumonia, blech!) since last Wednesday night, and just never got around to it. The good news is that the video clips are available online, so you can still tune in.
Anyway, last week I was contacted in advance about Oprah’s planned special for Monday, February 8th. During the 2-hour special, Oprah would be conversing 1-on-1 with four convicted sex offenders who committed sexual crimes on children. Topics would include what the child molesters themselves had done, but even more importantly, how they did it: how they connected with the children, gained their trust, seduced them, committed the crimes, tried to cover them up, etc.
I didn’t get the opportunity to watch the entire 2-hour special, but I did watch the first part of the video clips, which is 51 minutes in length. In it the four child molesters introduced themselves, and Oprah asked them about their own stories. Toward the end of the video the men went into more detail about how they gained the trust of children, and what parents need to watch out for.
It was a bit of an eye opener to me, but sadly not too much of one, as I am a victim of child sexual abuse, and a lot of what the men said hit close to home for me. But I’m going to watch the remainder of the video clips, and I would definitely encourage you to as well. Protecting your children against sexual abuse is of paramount importance, and sadly, some of the best education and information on preventing and sniffing out potential abuse can come from the mouths of the molesters themselves.
