So I’ve been seeing commercials and promos for the LYSOL No-Touch Hand Soap System. My first reaction: you have got to be fucking kidding. Seriously. Why are we so damn germ-obsessed? What the hell has our panties in such a wad that we have to go all nazi-ish with being clean and germ-free, even in our own home?
Now don’t get me wrong. I’m all for hands-free soap systems in public restrooms, and sure, hands-free dryers and paper towel dispensers are nice to. But that’s in public RESTROOMS, where god only knows how many creepy, skanky people are in there, what in god’s name they’re doing, and how often an employee actually stops in to do some disinfecting and cleaning. And yes, I carry hand sanitizer in both our of vehicles and in my purse — but it’s only used after I visit an ATM or go through a drive-thru, since I don’t have access to soap and a sink with running water.
It’s good to be vigilant with hand washing, and it’s an excellent idea to have minimal contact with dirty surfaces — especially shopping cart handles and ATM machines. Those things are just gross. But your HOME? You live in your home, so you know who’s in it, what they’re doing (for the most part) and how often you’re cleaning it! I think it’s absolutely ridiculous to have a hands-free soap dispenser IN YOUR HOME.
You know, some bacteria is good for you. Study after study has shown that without the proper exposure to at least some bacteria, a person’s immune system never strengthens and develops the proper response. So when some big, bad nasty bacteria comes along, it crumples, and the person winds up getting horribly ill.
As my grandmother used to say — every kid needs to eat a peck of dirt.
And for the record? I clean my bathroom at least twice a week, and I use disinfecting wipes to wipe down the doorknobs, toilet rim & lid, sink, faucet, counter top, and yes — the soap dispenser itself!
