I’m on my third day of being at the pool with Alyssa and Ryan, and today is the second time that I’m here alone with them. Dan was with us yesterday, and I’m not going to lie, it was nice to have his company. It was also reassuring to know there is a second pair of eyes to keep track of Alyssa and Ryan with, though to be honest it really wasn’t necessary, except for when Alyssa wanted to go off of the diving board. I have her in a Swimways swim trainer this year, and it doesn’t provide nearly as much bouyancy as the swim sweater she wore for the last two years did. That’s a good thing, since it teaches her to swim and makes her more accountable for keeping afloat. But it’s bad in terms of there being more of a risk of her going under and not being able to resurface immediately. So whenever she’s in the deeper water, I like to be right with her!
Ryan is wearing an Ocean Pacific life vest style swim trainer. It too doesn’t provide as much bouyancy as the Swimways swim sweater did. But it fits him like a life vest, and as a bonus provides him with a bit of extra protection from the sun. What I really like about it — and why I decided to get him the Ocean Pacific swim trainer instead of the Swimways one — is that is zips up in the back. Alyssa is able to get in and out of her swim trainer, but there’s no way Ryan can get out of his. Whew!
We’re getting this pool thing down to a pretty good routine. We get up in the morning, get into our swimsuits and such, and while the kids eat breakfast and play, I clean up dishes, do some work, and then around 11:30am put together our lunch. There’s no way in hell I’m dropping $1.50 on hot dogs, pretzels and nachos when I can bring our own lunches. It’s cheaper, and it’s healthier! It would be kind of hard to tell someone off for making a snarky comment about best weight loss supplements if the kids and I are chowing down on hot dogs and cheese-loaded chips, you know?
I plan on getting the pool membership this coming Friday. At $4 each (execpt for Ryan — he’s free until he turns five), we’ll quickly wind up spending what a pool membership would cost! And with the membership, we can come and go several times throughout the day — perfect for my work-at-home schedule.
