As Ryan’s therapist recently said to me, there’s nothing wrong with signing Alyssa and Ryan up for multiple vacation bible schools — and yes, I frequently admit to doing that; they’re currently on their third one, whee! — since it’s just like FREE. SUMMER. CAMP. Oh yes, validation. Not that I was looking for any, but her response was much better than my mom’s, “Wow, I never would have thought of that”, which implied that I’m a sucky parent for pawning my kids off on churches. Pfft, the kids love it, it’s GOOD for them, it encourages socialization, working with others, working in groups, remaining organized in large groups, respecting authority, etc. For Ryan in particular it’s really good. As for me? Since I’m one of those lucky people with netbooks, I head to the nearest wifi-offering location (in last week’s case, it was next door to McDonald’s) and get some work done.
And you know what? It’s a total win/win/win. The kids love it, I love it, the churches are satisfied with their outreach. We’re all happy!
