Stop lying!

Category:

Alyssa has picked up the habit of lying, and it’s one I’d like to break asap. Her personal record is two lies back to back, and seven total lies in one day. *sigh* I understand why kids lie (seriously, if you haven’t read it, pick up a copy of NurtureShock and devour it), but so young? And so often? And so stubbornly? You would think she’d have figured out by now that lying often gets her into more trouble than whatever it is she lied about in the first place! For instance, ripping Ryan’s blanket off of his head = bad. Lying about it = very, very bad. Simple math, no? No lying = bad; lying = VERY bad.

Argh.

Does the lying phase stop? I feel bad for not believing the things Alyssa tells me, but these days that is my first reaction!

you know what yanked me out of that phase? humiliation. sad but true i was still doing the telling stories stuff into junior high but instead of lying to my parents i started lying to my friends. we were not a very well off family and so i didn’t really feel cool with my friends. so i would make up crap about my family including saying they were from england. it came out a year or so later that i was full of crap and i lost a friend because of it. that snapped me out of it and i haven’t done it since. there’s probably better, less traumatizing ways to deal with it lol but that really taught me a lesson.

I think once kids start lying, it doesn’t really stop, the lies just change. At 5, she’s lying about what she does to Ryan. At 9, she’ll probably lie about things she’s gotten into (makeup?) that she shouldn’t have. At 15, she’ll be trying to lie about where she’s going with friends. I think lying is a natural part of growing up. Kids push boundaries to see what they can get away with. JMHO. :) Amy’s last blog entry: 5-000 Questions- Part 2
