I had surgery last Wednesday, and my husband has been beyond awesome from the get-go. He was with me until I was wheeled into surgery (psst… I’m pretty sure that knowing your stomach has been reduced to the size of an egg and your bowels have been rearranged is the best best appetite suppressant out there! I am SO afraid of overeating it isn’t funny). Afterward he was in my hospital room waiting for me, and stayed with me until I was discharged on Friday afternoon. The only exception was Thursday evening for about three hours, but that was only because I insisted he go and run the errand he needed to, and our friend Jason came to stay with me while he was gone.
Dan has been so fantastic… in the hospital helping me out of bed, into bed, with walks, showering, changing clothes, fetching slippers, etc. Here at home he’s taken over everything, and also brings me medicine, drinks, pillows, my laptop, whatever I need.

I love this man so much. ♥

They were out of focus (I was playing with my manual-focus-only lens, and of course that’s when Alyssa jumped into Dan’s lap and they started being all cute!), but with some color/hue/saturation/vignette adjustments, I was able to make them look quite nice, despite the fuzziness and blur.

Dan got locked out today. He stepped out the back door to dump the dirty sand from our hermit crab tank (did I ever mention that we have hermit crabs? Well, we do. Hello Kitty Cindy, Rainbow Cindy and Butterfly Cindy. All three Cindys like to swap shells around, so we really don’t know who is who anymore, hence why they’re identified by the shell that they are currently in!), and in the time it took him to open the back door, step out on the landing, walk down the four steps to the back yard and dump the contents of the tank, Ryan had followed him out and shut the door. The locked door.

Now, you would have thought that Dan learned his lesson last year, when Ryan — then only 19 months old — locked Dan, Alyssa and myself out on a bitterly cold and snow-filled February night. I know I did. Since that night I have always made sure to have my keys WITH me, or I unlock the door (by turning the little switch in the back, you know how it goes) before stepping out, even if it’s to set trash in the can or put the dog on her tether or grab a package that was delivered to our front door.

But nope, lesson definitely not learned. This happened around 1pm, so there was Dan, in a t-shirt, lounge pants and no shoes or socks, and Ryan in a diaper and t-shirt (I fully dress him every morning, and within an hour he rips off everything but his shirt and diaper. Sometimes the shirt goes too.), stuck outside. No keys, no cell phone, and Dan didn’t go to a neighbor to ask to use their phone to call me (he says he doesn’t remember my number. But he could have called my mom, who could have called me. Or he could have called his job, who has my number on a list, so they could have called me. Or he could have emailed me from a neighbor’s computer, etc. You see where I’m going with this!).

So imagine my surprise and amusement when I pulled up at 1:50pm to see a pants-less Ryan swinging on the swing set and Dan pacing in the yard. Heh.

Of course, I wasn’t so amused when I saw that Ryan was filthy, he had skinned knees and cut up toes from playing with no pants or shoes on. So then I had to bathe him and bandage him and calm him down (obviously, the soapy water stung his cuts and scrapes).

But overall, I’m still amused, even if it is at Dan’s expense. I just hope he learned his lesson, and ALWAYS remembers to take his keys or unlock the door before heading outside!

A real relationship with my father is something I never had. There were definite problems with him, and problems that happened in my mother’s marriage to him, so when I was six years old they split. The divorce was final less than a year later. To this day we’re more like acquaintances. I last spoke with him on the phone for about ten minutes a few weeks ago, and before that last February, which was when I last saw him. There was actually a six year period when I didn’t hear from him or see him at all.

Believe me, each and every day I am not only thankful for a wonderful husband, who is my mate, my life partner, my best friend, but for having such a wonderful father for my daughter. They definitely have the father/daughter relationship I never had, and I am so thankful for what they have.

Alyssa is definitely a Daddy’s girl, and anyone who sees her with Dan instantly knows it!
