As of yesterday evening I got officially tired of battling with my three and a half year old, Alyssa, over putting her toys away. She’s all too willing to drag them out of the bins and all over the house, or just empty out the bins in her room, but is not very willing to put them away. In the past, either myself or my husband would eventually get sick and tired of pleading with her and scolding her to put her toys away.

But last night? Hell no. If she’s old enough to take them out, she’s old enough to put them away. Furthermore, I am not a maid. So after a half hour of her being in her room and doing everything but putting her toys away, I handed her a trash bag. All of the toys that her bins once contained all now in a large garbage bag. We told her they’re going “away”. She thinks they’re being put in the trash. We’ll be putting them in the shed for safekeeping. If she can responsibly take care of the toys she has currently for several weeks, we’ll bring in a few more at a time and see how she does.
