Happy Halloween!

Can you believe it’s already October 31st? My mom and grandmother always said that once you have kids and they get beyond the toddler years the time will really start to fly, and I believe them. The last time I stopped and thought about it, Christmas was thirteen weeks away. Now it’s just eight weeks away! But before Christmas there’s Thanksgiving, and before Thanksgiving there’s Halloween, which is today. Whoo!

Unfortunately, due to my broken foot, I will not be able to take Alyssa and Ryan Trick Or Treating tonight. Dan will, and I’ll have to contend with dressing up as a fairy and wearing the costume to Old Country Buffet tonight, which is where we’re taking Alyssa and Ryan (and my brother, of course) for dinner prior to Trick Or Treat.

Better late than never, right? My excuse: October and November have been very busy months. I have been running around like crazy these past few weeks!

In case you can’t tell, Ryan is Wow Wow Wubbzy, and Alyssa is a princess riding a unicorn.

Why change the time?

I grew up in Philadelphia. In fact, I was in my teens when we moved from Philly to a rural area. I trick-or-treated faithfully every Halloween, including 1995′s Halloween, when I was sick throwing up but still managed to drag my sorry ass out in my Halloween costume for about an hour.

My first Halloween in my new town, I almost missed because the trick-or-treat date wasn’t on Halloween itself. While Halloween falls on the 31st of every October, up here they change things around to hold it on the 25th, 26th, 27th, etc. The reasoning? Supposedly by changing the date and time, the chances of having pranks and misbehaving miscreants out on the streets is greatly reduced. Pfft. Personally, I don’t see how holding Halloween night a few days early is going to successfully deter kids from egging homes and toilet papering trees. Those are things done on an OCCASION, not a specific DATE.

This is probably one of the few years where we’ll actually be well prepared for Halloween. Alyssa had her costume all picked out over two weeks ago, and we settled on Ryan’s costume last week. This year, Alyssa is going to be a witch. I know, it’s a little “traditional”, but the witch costume is absolutely adorable, and it’s something she was ecstatic about from the start. Ryan is going to be a piece of candy corn. Our original choices for costumes were a Hello Kitty costume for Alyssa, and a frog costume for Ryan.

We picked up both costumes from Target.
