This week has been one of those weeks where both kids don’t want to sleep, don’t want to nap, have been making mess after mess (Alyssa and Ryan), whining incessantly (Ryan), giving me serious attitude (Alyssa), and have been generally driving me up a wall. This is despite taking them outside every day, and/or to one of the local playgrounds to give them the chance to run around and expend a lot of their energy.

What makes things worse than usual is that my husband has been working a lot of mid-shifts lately. That’s all he’s been doing, every day since last Tuesday. So in the mornings he is leaving right before, right as or right after the kids are getting up, and at night he is coming home right before, right as or right after the kids have gone to bed.

So no breaks for me! And I understand that single parents go through the motions with no breaks, but I’m not a single parent, so I am not accustomed to being the only parent. I’m used to having Dan around to pitch in!

Oh well, it is nice to have him home in the evenings. But I need to find new things to do with the kids, because dear god, they have me crawling the walls and REALLY looking forward to when they go to sleep at night!

Today would have been a perfect day to take Alyssa to the Philadelphia zoo, which I am desperately wanting to do. But since Dan had plans, my mom was busy and couldn’t watch Ryan for the day, and our bank account isn’t feeling too generous at the moment, I put off what would have been a $100 or more day and opted for something completely free, except for the cost of gas: an afternoon at the playground.

Sunshine, a temperature near 70, a big playground and lots of little kids for Alyssa to play with (we got there before school let out, so the oldest kid probably wasn’t even five!) made for a terrific afternoon.

Photos!

Alyssa checks out the goat at the petting zoo (closed, unfortunately).

Isn’t he cute? He was rubbing along the fence much like a cat rubs along your legs and furniture.

Some llamas at a farm down the road from my house.

This llama needs his bangs trimmed!
